I believe our current spiritual state; our walk with the Lord, and how we view our own actions contribute to our feelings of depression and lack of self-worth.
Our conscience brings us guilty feelings for the things we have done, and depression results if we have self-guilt.
Jesus Christ came to free us from all of our guilt, and the depression question is most definitely a salvation question. By taking upon Himself the penalty for our transgressions, He has also removed the "guilty verdict" which would have condemned us.
John 8:36Also:
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?
Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.
Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.
And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
1 John 3:17-24Christ tells us to come and follow Him, and by following Him, we work to please Him, by doing what He commands us to. This is abiding in Him. And if we abide in Him, He will abide in us, and bless us with life more abundant.
Jesus said "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser" in John 15:1
He continues:
John 15:5-8 (ESV),
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
All fall short of God's Glory, as each of us have the stain of sin-guilt upon us. Not until we accept the gift which has been given to us by the Eternal, First and Last, will we be cleansed of all guilt and corruptions, which eat at us as a result of our sinful choices. In His Sacrifice we are cleansed of all unrighteousness, and the guilt can no longer have power over us, as sin no longer has power. It is gone.
It is not magic, it is a settled, judged state in which we stand, once we accept Christ's blood as payment and believe on the Son, and the One who sent Him. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Now, being in Christ Jesus we "abide in the True Vine, and do His Will. We strive to please God, instead of our own selfish desires. We labor in the power of His Holy Spirit to produce abundant fruit for His Kingdom, and stand fast against the attacks and temptations of Satan and his minions.
The battle is not against flesh and blood. Welcome to the War!
Ephesians 6:12
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is The Eternal Word, The Almighty God.
Isaiah 44:6
Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel
and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:
“I am the first and I am the last;
besides me there is no god.
One's spiritual well-being and the state of our soul should be the first thing we consider when we are dealing with depression as a result of our life's choices, which lead to life's circumstances.
